If you are having difficulty getting a homeowner’s insurance policy you may want to follow these steps from Redleaf National Institute:

  • Check out the "Insurance Directory" on www.redleafinstitute.org for insurance agents in your state.
  • Ask other providers in your area where they found insurance.
  • Find an independent insurance agent that represents many different companies.
  • Look in the Yellow Pages for a listing of independent agents.
  • Ask an independent agent about surplus line if you are unable to get other coverage. This will be less comprehensive and more expensive.

*This should be a provider’s last resort: Go to your state insurance commissioner office and tell them you’ve been denied coverage. There are some state insurance pools that may help you.
